So often we come across clients who felt they had to compromise on their goals after speaking to contractors, but this should never be the case. Softwood, hardwood or composite?

Depending on what you want your decking for, materials matter. Like to change things up a lot? Then softwood might be for you. It’s cheap, and you can change the color or finish super easily! Be aware though, it doesn’t last long without proper maintenance.

Money no limit? Then hardwood might be for you. It’s expensive, but looks amazing, is low maintenance, and can last for over 50 years!

Not fussed about wood? Maybe composite decking would work best for you. It’s a mix of wood and plastic, making it waterproof and super easy to clean. It can even come in tile form with cute little LED lights! It can be expensive, but if you want something you can install once and enjoy forever, it could be well worth the price.

Be sure to give your contractor bucket loads of information about what you’re looking for! If you want to use your deck as an exercise area, anti-slip decking could be a must. If you love art, sculptural elements might be something you hadn’t even considered! A big family will always benefit from inbuilt seating and storage. The sky really is the limit if you connect with a creative contractor, and they are out there! Planters, drinks coolers, handrails, a bar…we for one love nothing better than wowing our clients, and you should expect nothing less from whoever you choose to work with.
